Hard Candy (2005) Review

Hard Candy is an American thriller about a mature 14 year old girl called Hayley who meets a 32 year old photographer called Jeff online. when they meet up with each other everything seems to good to be true, little does he know it is.

I heard of this film a while ago and I was hesitant to watch it. I watched the trailer first and from what i gathered it was a classic girl meets someone online, falls in love, turns out they are not who they say they are and they get stupid. But, when i read the reviews they said things like: "Absolute terrifying" and "Smart, challenging and timely look at the world of internet grooming". The poster for the movie and the trailer is really misleading because it's totally different! I got a little curious and decided to watch the film.I have to admit that at first the film seemed a little clique, but it was very different and 'refreshing' to see the roles flipped over. The film was thrilling and  and a little scary. I thought the film provided the shock factor and i could understand the controversy over it. I actually liked Ellen Page's character (Hayley) and thought she stayed in character well and was smart and not annoyingly clever like in Juno, but also played a good psychopath :)To be honest there is a lot of things about this film that really just annoyed me. Like the beginning is annoying and long and gave me a headache from that stupid red box moving around. And I hated the way the film, between scenes cut out and didn't follow it through. I also didn't like how the movie made me feel sympathetic towards, the wrong people. And also, the brutality of some scenes is absolutely horrific (MENTALLY SCARRING STUFF PEOPLE) like the at home castration scene done by a teenager and suicidal scene with a noose and pouring toilet cleaner in someone's mouth. Seriously not for the faint-hearted, that stuff had me cringing and covering my eyes begging for it to be over! And i thought the ending was REALLY bad, and quite unexpected, but they they kinda continued it on and didn't go anywhere with it that it would have gone if they would have ended it earlier.

Overall, I thought the film was good, but too many things annoying me about it and i thought it was really controversial and mentally scarring enough the freak a person out. But if you can handle everything i have written i would recommend, but if your like me then probably not worth a watch. I'd give it a solid 5/10.
